Having your vehicle towed by a wrecker company can be an agonising experience, depending on the reason why it's being moved from one location to another.

The wrecker service can also be a gruelling experience as Kenneth 'Fudgie' Peart, the proprietor of Fudgie's Wrecker Service, can attest to.

With offices located at 26 1/2A Gore Terrace, Kingston 10, Fudgie's Wrecker Service does towing and recovery service of bikes, cars, pick-ups, buses, trucks, boats, forklifts, compressors, and backhoes to name a few.

Under the slogan 'Attitude is the difference, the company operates on a 24-hour basis, providing flatbed services and storage.

Fudgie told THE STAR that he has been involved in the wrecker services business for approximately 10 years.

"I started as a result of bad experiences from previous businesses, which were car rental and the mini bus business. I decided to venture into something new," he said with regard to starting his wrecker company.

Peart told the STAR that he began by purchasing one wrecker and in so doing, he had to learn how to drive and be the mechanic and electrician for the vehicle.

CHALLENGES

He said that like any other business, there were challenges.

"There is the difficulty of collecting money from creditors and also the frequent release of vehicles that are towed to the police station. These vehicles are released without payment of wrecking fee. That to me is one of the greatest challenges," Peart said.

According to Peart, getting involved in the wrecker services, one would have to love it, and as such he would not recommend that just anybody to get involved.

He said: "You have to want to or be a lover of the business and have an interest. You don't just see wrecking and say you're going to try it. You have to have the wish, want, or love of it."

When asked what was his most memorable day on the job, Peart said it was a difficult task to reveal his most memorable day because over the years, so many things had happened.

He said, "What I do is treat every day like the last day, so I do my best with it."

Similarly, when quizzed about his worst encounter, this, too, was difficult to identify.

"What I can tell you is that anytime any of the trucks are down that is the time I begin to feel restless," said Peart.

Peart told THE STAR that he was serious about his business. So much so that when asked about limitations, he told THE STAR that time becomes limited for personal or private life.

Peart said: "Running a 24-hour business, I have to be in place and position to address the needs of clients as simple as responding to calls or executing activities."
