Landlord stones tenant for money

A landlord who engaged his tenants in a stone-throwing debacle over the payment of water bills - and caused injury in the process - was sentenced to three months' imprisonment last Friday.

Charged with assault occasioning bodily harm, possession of an offensive weapon, and using indecent language is Devon Weir.

He pleaded guilty to all three offences in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court and gave the court an explanation for the assault charge.

The court heard that on January 24, Weir assaulted the complainant using a stone. He hit her on the right hand causing a bruise, swelling, and pain.

Weir said: "Me and her don't have anything. I rent a place to them and I went and asked them for the money for water. I went back and him start throw stone at me and run inside the house. I threw back a stone and it hit her."

Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey asked Weir, "How much time you ever pleaded guilty?"

"Put it at three times, Your Honour," answered Weir.

After scolding the accused, who had a challenge keeping quiet in the courtroom when told to, Pusey handed down her sentence.

Weir was sentenced to three months for assault, 10 days for possession of an offensive weapon, and 10 days for indecent language.

The sentence is to run concurrently.
