Illegal throw-up wires dangle from JPS poles in several communities across the island.

The Jamaica Public Service )JPS) is now offering monetary rewards to persons who provide information on businesses that steal electricity.

Informants can benefit from cash payout if they provide useful information on light thieves by contacting Crime Stop on its 311 line.

Audrey Williams, corporate communications officer for the light and power company, told THE STAR that the monetary rewards that will be provided to informants will be determined on a case by case basis.

"After a report is investigated and confirmed, the matter is brought to the attention of the business owner. Very often, at this point, they acknowledge the illegal connection and are willing to pay outstanding monies to the company. Most persons prefer not to go through the courts, while JPS also has very little to gain through lengthy court proceedings," Williams said.
