The Jamaica Football Federation has expressed deep sadness at the sudden death of respected sports journalist and broadcaster Donald Oliver, describing him as an erudite commentator who made a significant contribution to sports broadcasting in Jamaica.

Oliver, 40, died suddenly on Tuesday morning after reportedly suffering a medical emergency.

In a statement, the JFF extended condolences to Oliver's family and friends, as well as to the wider football fraternity, noting that his passing has left a major void in local sports media.

The federation said Oliver was a familiar voice and face in Jamaican sports commentary, particularly football, where he built a reputation for bringing matches to life with vivid descriptions of goals, players and match-day atmosphere.

Over the years, Oliver worked with several mainstream media entities locally and across the region. He provided lead commentary for major competitions, including schoolboy football, the Jamaica Premier League, Reggae Boyz matches in the CONCACAF Nations League and select international friendlies.

Beyond football, Oliver also covered a wide range of international sporting events, including the Summer and Winter Olympic Games and the Commonwealth Games.

His work earned him several accolades, including the Prime Minister's Youth Award in Journalism in 2009 and the Press Association of Jamaica's Best Television Feature or Documentary award in 2022.

Interim General Secretary of the JFF, Roy Simpson, paid tribute to Oliver, describing him as a commentator of exceptional talent.

"Donald Oliver was the Jamaican Peter Drury. Listening to him commentate was a joy, and he represented us all as Jamaicans proudly," Simpson said.

"I first met Donald Oliver in 2010 during the 2010 FIFA World Cup at CVM-TV, and from then on I knew of his ability. I am deeply distraught to hear of his passing and extend condolences to the entire sporting fraternity for the loss of an erudite football commentator."

Oliver's death has sent shockwaves through the local sports community, where he was widely respected for his professionalism, passion and deep knowledge of the game.
