J'can jailed after failing to pay drug fines

A Jamaican man who failed to pay fines he received for drug-related offences in Barbados has been jailed for two years.

According to www.barbadostoday.bb, Jamaican national Samuel Leroy Campbell, who arrived at the Grantley Adams International Airport on Thursday, was interviewed by Drug Squad personnel and referred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

THE STAR gathered that while there, he passed 121 packages of cannabis weighing one kilogramme.

Campbell was subsequently charged with possession of cannabis, possession with intent to supply cannabis, trafficking cannabis, and importation of cannabis.

He was taken before the Magistrates Court and was fined BBS$10,000 (J$629,453), to be paid forthwith or spend two years in prison for the charge of possession of cannabis.

Campbell was also fined an additional BBS$5,000 (J$314,726) for the importation of cannabis, to be paid forthwith or spend two years in jail.

Both fines were not paid and Campbell was sent to jail.

The sentences will run concurrently.

He was reprimanded and discharged for the two other offences of possession with intent to supply and trafficking of cannabis.
