Man to be sentenced for bribing cop

A St James man who admitted to offering a cop $5,000 in order to escape being booked for traffic offences is to be sentenced on September 9.

Nineteen-year-old Ricoy McGhie, of a Lottery address in the parish, pleaded guilty to the charge of bribery when he appeared in the St James Parish Court on July 21.

Following the guilty plea, Parish Judge Natalie Hart-Hines ordered that a social enquiry report should be prepared to help in determining the defendant's sentence.

The court was told that on May 21, a police team was conducting a spot check along Barnett Street in Montego Bay when McGhie, who was driving a motor car, was signalled to stop.

McGhie was subsequently informed by one of the officers that he would be ticketed for not wearing his seat belt, driving with expired documents and no driver's licence.

It was at that point that he reportedly offered the $5,000 to the lawman.
