The Kingston Central police have been left saddened and shaken after one of their own, Sergeant Dale Thompson, was shot in the head, while pursuing criminals on Saturday night.

Thompson was still battling for life in the Intensive Care Unit at the Kingston Public Hospital up to press time last night.

"He is being given all the support from the internal organisation. The Chaplaincy (Unit) is in touch with his colleagues and family members," said Assistant Commissioner of Police Devon Watkis, who is in charge of Area Four.

Pursuing the case

Watkis told THE STAR that the police have taken the incident seriously and are pursuing the case aggressively and professionally.

Already, they have tracked down and are questioning two persons who are believed to be connected to the incident.

Thompson was shot when he confronted a group of gunmen who killed a security guard in downtown Kingston.

The deceased security guard has been identified as 39-year-old Asfidel Harrison.

One of the gunmen and a bystander were also shot during the ordeal. They were taken to hospital where they were admitted in stable condition.

Investigations are ongoing.
