Hanna reports social media threats

Member of Parliament for South East St Ann, Lisa Hanna, has taken online threats made against her life very seriously, and reported her concerns to the police who have launched an investigation.

Social media users have been hurling threats at Hanna following comments she made during a recent radio interview, calling for authorities to discuss placing a ban on some of Vybz Kartel's music because of its lyrical content.

Head of the Counter Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigation Branch, Assistant Commissioner of Police Clifford Chambers, told THE WEEKEND STAR that an official report was made to the police.

Criminal offence

He said an investigation has been launched and "we are advancing nicely".

He reminded the public that it is a criminal offence to issue threats on any social media platform.

"That leverage comes as a result of the Offences Against The Persons Act which ... speaks to the issuing of any letter in writing to kill, to murder any person, and it's actually a felony," Chambers said.

Chambers also said, "We are also looking at the cybercrime legislation, Section Nine, Sub-section One, which speaks to the use of a computer to send to another person any data message that is obscene, constitutes a threat, or is menacing in nature."

The police said anyone who has been so wronged (threatened) can make a formal compliant which will be investigated.
