Couple charged in ammunition find

A husband and wife were dragged before the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court after 50 9mm bullets were found at their home.

Charged with illegal possession of ammunition is 40-year-old Ronald McLaren, a bank teller, and his wife, 47-year-old Shernet McLaren, a teacher.

The court heard that the police were called to the bank on May 11, after a report was made against Mr McLaren in his presence.

After a search warrant was secured, the police went to their home on McArthur Avenue and found the cartridges in their bedroom.

They do not own a firearm licence.

The court was told that the live rounds were found among Mr McLaren's clothes.

OPPOSED TO BAIL

The attorney submitted a bail application for both accused, however, Parish Judge Shansia Burrell only granted bail for Mrs McLaren, siding with the investigators who had only opposed to bail for her husband.

The attorney argued that both clients are fit for bail citing that no violence was involved. However, Burell said: " People don't throw bullets at people."

The court heard from the investigators that investigations are ongoing because they have telephone messages with Mr McLaren discussing with someone about something to put the bullets in.

The STAR understands that the bank called the police as Mr McLaren was alleged to be involved in fraudulent activities.

His wife was offered bail in the sum of $250,000.

She is to report to the Half-Way Tree Police Station on Mondays and Thursdays between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.

She is to be fingerprinted and is to surrender all travel documents and a stop order was placed at all ports.

The couple are to return to court on May 29.
