300 top students receive gifts for school
More than 300 top-performing students from several schools across Montego Bay turned out at the New Fortress Energy (NFE) back-to-school fair that was held at Pier 1 last Friday.
The event, which was staged in collaboration with the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MBCCI), awarded students with vouchers of $6,000 and $8,000 for use at Maxie Department Store and Henderson's Bookstore, respectively. They also received backpacks, haircuts and medical screenings, while enjoying the entertainment package that was on offer.
"We are thrilled to be here today celebrating with these bright young minds that leave their communities and homes every day to work hard in school and earn excellent grades," said Verona Carter, vice-president of public affairs for New Fortress Energy.
One parent, Debbie Mair, whose son attends Chetwood Memorial Primary and has an 88 per cent average, expressed her gratitude for the assistance.
"In addition to my son Joshua, I also have a daughter in university, and it's a bit hard to find the funds to ensure they both have everything they need for school," she told Western STAR. "But with this support, I won't need to spend for backpack and medical."
Meanwhile, Dr Michelle Pinnock, regional director for the Ministry of Education, challenged the students to continue raising the bar of excellence.
"Keep being a beacon, because we're looking to you to secure a bright future for Jamaica. It's also very encouraging to see so many parents today; keep supporting your children and pushing them beyond their comfort zones, because that's how they're going to be successful in life," she said.
