Brave Westmoreland resident disarms gunman

Residents of Truro in Westmoreland are now singing the praises of a man from their community, who single-handedly disarmed a gunman who attacked him at his home on Monday afternoon.

The man was, however, shot and injured by his attacker.

"Everybody want him fi pull through," one resident from the community told THE STAR, referring to the injured man, who is still at hospital.

"Wi haffi give him respect. The gunman them ruff inna Westmoreland, and every day yuh hear seh them kill somebody else. This time the victim get the upper hand, and wi sorry seh him never have the strength fi hold him (attacker) 'til police come. Them mek after mi already too, and a skill mi skill why mi still alive. So, everyone inna Truro glad seh a so it work out. A one less gun outta road," a shopkeeper from the community told THE STAR.

Reports by the Frome police are that about 10:45 p.m., the man was at his home when he opened a door to his house, and was in the process of going outside.

He came face to face with a man who was armed with a handgun.

It is understood that during a tussle with the gunman, the male was shot in his upper body.

During the fight, he managed to disarm his attacker, who fled the scene, leaving behind his gun, which was loaded with several rounds of ammunition.

The police were summoned, and upon their arrival, the wounded man handed over the weapon, a Browning 9mm semi-automatic pistol, which was fitted with a magazine containing nine live rounds.

He was then rushed to the Savanna-la-Mar hospital, where he was treated and admitted in stable condition.
