Bail denial for alleged motor vehicle fraudster

A man who reportedly collected J$1.85 million from two persons to buy motor vehicles for them but failed to get the cars or return the money was denied bail when he appeared in the St James Parish Court last Wednesday.

Adrian Brown is charged with four counts of obtaining money by false pretence.

Allegations are that between March 6 and April 15, the two complainants gave money to Brown in order to purchase motor vehicles for them.

He reportedly collected J$550,000 in two payments from one complainant, and J$1.3 million in two payments from the other complainant.

When the vehicles were not forthcoming, the complainants made multiple attempts to contact Brown to recover their money.

A report was subsequently made, and Brown was later arrested and charged.

During Wednesday’s court sitting, presiding judge Sandria Wong-Small rejected efforts by Brown’s attorney, Nicholas Kellyman, to secure bail for his client due to Brown’s failure to obey court summonses on past occasions.

“I want to know where their (complainants) money is, and my biggest concern, based on his track record, is whether he will come back here. Your client has had the disadvantage of having to appear before me on previous warrants,” Wong-Small said concerning Brown.

The court was also told that Brown may soon have another case pending with a third complainant under similar circumstances.

Brown was subsequently remanded in custody until June 7, at which time a plea and case management hearing are expected to take place.
