Man murdered near military base in MoBay

Gunmen invaded the community of Shanty Town, in Norwood, St James, yesterday and killed one man and seriously injured another.

The dead man has been identified as 53-year-old Hubert Black of a Norwood address.

The deadly attack took place close to a military base that was erected in Norwood shortly after a state of emergency was declared in the parish.

“The man dem need fi stop the foolishness,” one community member said. “One time gone, wi could a sit dung anywhere inna the community and play any game, whether a day or a night, but the younger youth dem get the place miserable, and start up the gun thing, and nobody inna Shanty Town don’t safe anymore.”

The police reports that about 3 p.m., Black and the other man were among a group of persons standing inside a shop at Shanty Town. They were attacked by three men armed with guns who opened fire on them.

Since the start of the year, a total of 119 persons have been murdered within the parish of St James, and the parish has seen a significant rise in murders and shootings over the past two months.
