Bag packers feel appreciated amid crisis

Those who have been deemed essential workers are the most critical to our survival during this crisis brought on by the coronavirus. Unsung heroes, who are currently employed at local supermarkets, told THE STAR that

now more than ever, they feel dedicated to carry out their duties.

Verna Frazer, a packer at a local supermarket in Alexandria, St Ann, told THE STAR that the COVID-19 outbreak has caused persons to be more appreciative of their role.

"When most places are on lockdown or persons are afraid to come out, I'm providing my services," she said.

"Some people tell us how thankful they are for us, and tell us that we are brave to be out. Remember, enuh, if the supermarket lock they won't be able to get any food," she added.

Employers have been urged to have as many of their staff work from home where possible in a quest to reduce the level of public travel and interactions. But while many Jamaicans are doing jobs from home, persons employed in areas such as supermarkets, the health care sectors, transport operators, and security personnel have had to get up, dress up, and show up for work. Some of these like Toussaint Brown, another supermarket employee, said even though that he is on edge while at work, he knows how critical his services are in this our time of disaster.

"I worry sometimes when me work, but me nuh make the virus really bother me. Right now people need me to help, I just do the right thing like wash me hands often so me safe at the same time," he said.
