Dr Dwaine Spencer, the People’s National Party (PNP) candidate for St Elizabeth South Eastern, is looking forward to nursing the constituency back to good health.

The medical doctor of 16 years says he is positive that he has garnered enough experience to save the lives of constituents once he overthrows the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) incumbent Frank Witter.

“Being a doctor and being in politics is basically the same thing for me,” he said. “These occupations are along the lines of offering my service to the people, only thing is that with politics I have a mic so I can reach more people.” Spencer told THE STAR that his undying desire to offer his services to people resulted from his childhood experiences.

“While growing up, I had friends that were brighter than I and they never managed to reach the level of education where I got to reach just because of finances, and that should not be the case. People should not have to struggle in any way, so that’s why I want to be the person to help,” said Spencer.

He added: “My constituency is where I live and operate business for a while, and I have come to realise some of the struggles of the people and that is what drove me to politics. When I see some of the deficiencies that we have to put up with, it can’t continue like that and I want to care for them.”

Spencer, 38, entered politics in 2016 after former MP Richard Parchment lost the seat to Witter by 205 votes in that year’s election. He is confident of usurping the incumbent today.

“Our canvass and polls show that we will win,” he said. “We just need to be effective on the ground.”

Spencer admitted that if he became member of parliament, he would have to give up some of his time on the medical side.

“But at this point I don’t have a preference between being in politics and a medical doctor, I just love them both because I am for the betterment of people,” he said. “The good thing is that I have a sister who is a medical doctor as well, so now what we have to do is share the time. But I have not been at work since election was called because I have been in the constituency as the election period is more demanding.”
