Hope for burn victim Kerry Ann Collins
A two-night telethon on Facebook has raised the US$15,500 needed for airfare for burn victim Kerry Ann Collins to travel to the US for treatment.
The telethon was organised by Stephen Joseph of Sanmera Foundation, a local charity. But he said Collins still needs millions for the specialised treatment at a burn-care facility.
Collins, 25, received third-degree burns to over 80 per cent of her body on November 28 as she attempted to light her stove. Her story was highlighted in THE WEEKEND STAR.
Her sister Fellicia Collins said Kerry Ann needs US$773,000 (approximately J$113 million) to receive treatment at the Jackson Memorial Hospital. However, there may be an alternative.
"We have managed to work out a deal with Kendall Memorial Hospital in Florida, and while the amount is basically the same as Jackson Memorial, they are willing to take a payment plan but we have to start with US$300,000 (approximately J$43 million), so that is what we are doing everything in our power to raise," said Joseph, adding that $43 million is needed to secure the payment plan.
Remains in critical condition
"There are businesses owners who have been reaching out and saying that they want to contribute but they have not gotten back to us to yet as it relates to the sum and we haven't gotten anything in writing as yet," he added. Collins remains in critical condition at the Kingston Public Hospital.
"She has no skin so she is prone to getting infections. On Saturday night she went to theatre and she came out alive, and we are thankful for that. The doctors are doing everything they can but they are saying that her time is running out and she needs to get overseas now. She is sedated now because she was in a lot of pain and discomfort. Her life can be saved so I am just asking for the assistance to spare it, please," he said.
