Battered teen Kaylan Dowdie continues to put up a fierce fight for her life after her heart stopped beating twice in 24 hours last week.

But her mother, Veniesha Buckley, told THE STAR that things are looking a bit better as Kaylan had a pacemaker inserted last Saturday. She, however, remains on a ventilator at the University Hospital of the West Indies.

“The pacemaker will help to guard against the cardiac arrest. All now I can’t believe it that her heart stopped beating for 20 minutes last time. Last week her heart stopped twice in 24 hours. Her heart had stopped a total of seven times before but 20 minutes was the longest that it had ever happened. She is the strongest person I know,” she said.

Stabbed in the neck

The Papine High School past student was beaten by a group of women at a party on November 7. Buckley said her daughter was also stabbed in the neck.

Earlier this month, Buckley reported that Kaylan had woken up from the coma and even smiled.

Buckley, who usually shares updates about Kaylan’s condition on her social media pages, was tearful a few days ago when she shared that her daughter communicated to her that she wanted to go home, but was unable to because she cannot survive without a ventilator.

“The pacemaker is something that she can never take out. I am going to have to get a home ventilator eventually and get nurses to take care of her,” she said. “How do you tell your child that she can’t come home or get up? How do you tell her child that you can’t make things better or why I have to leave her? It is not fair and she thinks God is punishing her for something she didn’t do,” she added via a live Instagram video.

The five women charged in the incident remain in the custody of the police.
