Andrew Weir, 24, of Effortville in Clarendon, says he will not be defined by the social ills of his community.

In an interview with THE STAR, the Foga Road High School alumnus shared his zeal to make an impact in the community that has been on the police radar over the years.

"It's not easy to live in a violent community, but I stood firm, held my own, and had a mind of my own. I have a lot of friends who got caught up wrongfully and died by the gun, so it's not easy to live in a [violence-] tainted community."

Weir, a certified mixologist, credits the support of his parents, lauding them for their investment in the education of their children.

"They are the best parents a young man in a community like mine could have. They aren't rich, but they work and ensure the family is okay," he said.

Having attained seven Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate subjects, Weir went on to the Ebony Park HEART Academy in Clarendon, where he received certification in food and beverage in 2017. Amid the achievements, he said he wanted more. That led him to the Academy of Bartending, Spirits and Wines in Kingston, where he earned a diploma in bar operation and mixology in 2019, and a another in bar management and business studies in 2020. Weir is currently employed at Russell's T20 Restaurant and Sports Bar in St Catherine as a supervisor and lead bartender.

Noting his passion for the hospitality industry, Weir said he was relentless to pursue his dream in the field, having harboured interests of becoming a bartender and a chef since childhood.

"At Foga Road High, I was among a few males who chose to do food and nutrition. Most males chose electrical, mechanic or plumbing, but I was never fascinated by any of those," he told THE STAR.

"Mixology has always been a career that I love. Just watching persons throwing up bottles and putting on a show at the bar always excited me. Watching videos with all those 'pretty juice' as a youngster always excited me," he joked. Weir recently launched his business, 'Drew's_Aroma', which is an air, car and house freshener line. He made the products himself. He advised youth in his community not to be easily influenced.

"Set goals or try to learn a skill or trade. Not everyone will become a lawyer, doctor or teacher; so stay focused, be patient, and put God first in everything you do," he said.
