Wife pleads for help as husband battles cancer
Dudley Carter, who is battling B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, is in need of life-saving medication and is seeking the public's assistance in funding the cost.
Currently a patient at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH), Carter's wife Michelle told THE WEEKEND STAR that they are urgently in need of close to $400,000 to purchase the mediation needed by Thursday, June 3, to undergo another set of rigorous treatment.
"Since 2016 we have been trying on our own and have spent close to $14 million in treatments. We have taken out loans and have gotten assistance from his co-workers and employers, but right now we bruck. My bank books are dried. I have piles of receipts because we have to find a whole heap of medications. I have proof of everything that I am saying. He is suppose to get treatment next week but we just don't have the money now and that is why we are asking for help," she said.
Carter, 63, is a resident of Waterloo in Ewarton, St Catherine, and was diagnosed with cancer in 2016. Michelle stated that for years he suffered from tonsillitis, however, she became concerned when a huge bulge appeared at the back of his throat. The growth interfered with his speech.
"When I saw it I told him not to report to work and he went to the doctor who recommended that he did some tests and the results came back that he had cancer. His lymph nodes were badly swollen and although he wasn't feeling any pain, he was really weak and dizzy," she said.
Michelle stated that Dudley has received multiple chemotherapy and radiation treatments since then but unfortunately, the lymphoma returned.
She stated that following the treatment next Thursday, they will be in need of another $400,000 to repeat the process as the medication needed has to be purchased outside of the hospital grounds. She stated that following those treatments, he will need to travel to a medical facility in the USA for further medical assistance. A GoFundMe account that has been created for Carter has only so far raised CAD$589 of the CAD$15,000 goal. However Michelle, who is also a cancer survivor, said they remain optimistic that her husband will beat the disease.
"He is a fighter and that is one of the things I love about him. He is always saying that he wants to see our 15-year-old daughter grow up and I know he is holding on to her. I know a lot of persons that joined the clinic with him in 2016 have passed away, but he continues to fight," she said.
