The Government is still on track to provide 70,000 affordable housing solutions for Jamaicans within the next five years.

This assurance comes from Minister of Tourism and Leader of Government Business in the House of Representatives, Edmund Bartlett.

The Minister, who was closing the 2021/22 Sectoral Debate in the Lower House on Tuesday (June 15), said the Government is also working with developers to bring down the price point to an average of $5 million for a standard one-bedroom unit and $8 million for a two-bedroom unit.

“As we recover faster [and] stronger… better strides are being made to make housing solutions accessible to more Jamaicans,” he said.

Bartlett reminded that Minister of Housing, Urban Renewal, Environment and Climate Change, Pearnel Charles Jr., had highlighted in his contribution the need to not just build but to design the framework for a housing sector that is sustainable and resilient.

“Therefore, a comprehensive National Housing Policy will be placed before Parliament to address the complex housing challenges,” he said.

On the matter of climate change, Mr. Bartlett informed that Jamaica will have access to a US$11.1-million grant from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) to commence preparation of Jamaica’s first National Adaptation Plan (NAP).

“This plan will include a private-sector engagement strategy, a finance strategy and an investment plan for adaptation,” Bartlett said.
