A hard-working police constable who is stationed in the Corporate Area has been honoured by his peers for his work as a crime-fighter.

The cop, Lairie Lewis, is a member of the St Andrew Central (SAC) Operational Support Team.

"There are seven of us on the team and I must say this award is dedicated to the entire team, but more so to our team lead - Sergeant David Williams. He ensures his team is motivated and focused on the tasks, and I have to big him up," said Lewis.

He was the among more than 40 outstanding police officers, including retirees, who was celebrated by the St Andrew Central Police Division at its honours and awards ceremony held at the Police Officers' Club last Wednesday.

Sergeant Derrick Williams, who is assigned to the August Town Police Station, was presented with an award for being the officer who made the most arrests - a whopping 115 - in the division.

Sergeant Williams, a 33-year veteran in the police service, said, "I go to work daily with an open mind as my duties vary from ZOSO commander to patrol driver ... I feel justified that after so many years, the management team recognised my work and I am very appreciative of it."

Commissioner of Police Major General Antony Anderson, who was the guest speaker, congratulated the awardees and encouraged them to motivate the others and share the success.

"The collective success of the JCF is dependent on the individual success of each of you here today. Continue to be that 'Force for Good' and deliver quality service to our citizens," the commissioner said.

The St Andrew Central Police Division is led by Senior Superintendent Marlon Nesbeth. He said that the men and women under his command have demonstrated what it means to put 'service above self'.

"While there are other members who deserve an accolade, we were not able to award everyone; however, we thank you, the members on the ground, the foot soldiers, for continuing to display the high level of professionalism and service to the public," said Nesbeth.

As of December 18, St Andrew Central has recorded 81 murders since the start of 2021, in comparison to 98 murders recorded for the corresponding period last year. Shootings have also declined by four per cent.
