Lawmen prevent suicide attempt

Yesterday, the swift action from two policemen at the Half-Way Tree Transport Centre prevented a woman from committing suicide.

The woman, who is said to be of unsound mind, was seen threatening to jump from the top of a building with what appeared to be a rope around her neck. However, she was foiled by a group of men, two of whom were policemen, who were alerted to the situation by concerned bystanders.

Head of the St Andrew Central Police Division, Senior Superintendent Marlon Nesbeth, said the woman was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital for treatment immediately after she was taken into police custody.

"From what I've gathered, the female in question was threatening to harm herself, but that wasn't to be because of the swift response from the officers who are deployed inside the centre, responding to the alert from members of the public. The female was taken to the hospital for treatment," he said.

The incident comes just days after the death of Surrano Warren, a 61-year-old businessman of a St Thomas address, who reportedly leaped from the second floor of the Princess Margaret Hospital in the parish. In another report, a man of a Stony Hill, St Andrew address, tried to end his life when he reportedly jumped from a three-storey premises while at an event. The man suffered serious head injuries and has remained in hospital.
