Hearts broken into pieces - Only child murdered days before parent’s wedding

In a cruel twist of tales, a St Andrew mother is now grieving the death of her only child, some 13 hours after she had ironed his suit to wear at her wedding this Saturday.

Kenute Williams, 16, and a 10-grader at Papine High School in St Andrew, was killed around 11:30 a.m. while walking to school along Liguanea Avenue in the parish yesterday.

At the time of his death, he had his books, a Galaxy O2 cellphone and $1,000 lunch money on him. The police, according to the head of the St Andrew Central Police Division, Senior Superintendent Marlon Nesbeth, believe the killing was motivated by robbery.

Nesbeth also told THE STAR yesterday that a man was in police custody in connection to the murder of Kenute.

His mother, Carroline Robinson, 40, said that the devastating news about her son has shattered her heart into pieces particularly each time her mind replays their last conversation.

"Dem shoot mi baby fi nothing at all. Fi a likkle phone and lunch money? No sah! Di last thing him say to me was 'Mommy, later.' And mi say 'yes baby, later' But there is no later... Oh God! Jesus!" said a tearful Robinson in a telephone interview with THE STAR yesterday evening.

She stated that her son, who has been described as a "model student" by his form teacher Georgie Campbell, was every excited about her big day on Saturday and was looking forward to take part in the ceremonies.

"A Monday him say to me say 'Mommy, yah get married Saturday' and mi say 'yes mi baby', and a last night mi press him suit fi Saturday. Dem tek mi one baby, oh God! This is more than heart-breaking... mi cyah believe say mi baby dead. Dem tek weh mi one baby from mi fi nothing at all, nothing! One piece a dry phone!" Robinson cried.

"Mi nav nobody fi talk to now! Mi nav nobody fi talk to, oh God no! Every night mi baby tell mi good night... dem tek weh mi baby! Dem tek weh mi baby! Why dem affi kill him? Why dem couldn't just tek di piece a phone and leave me baby alone? What good a phone a do to yuh fi a life? Nothing cyah replace mi son, phone can be replaced. Di amount of phone mi buy mi son, phone can replace cause that a vanity but mi son cyah come back. Why yuh tek mi son from me? Mi son not even know people, him no do nobody nuttn. Father God, yuh say 'vengeance are yours', mighty God, let dah one yah swift, let dah one yah swift. Let dem have no rest!" she said.

According to the grief-stricken mother, her son was a straight-A student, who was humble in character and never gave trouble at school.

Her words were backed up by Campbell, who said that Kenute was always a top-three student with a special knack for technical drawing.

"He is one of my top students. He's a model student, who averages in the 90s. This is a tremendous loss, and there aren't enough words to explain the pain we are all feeling at this moment," Campbell said.
