THRICE AS NICE - MoBay throuple boldly defends three-people relationship
When Ryan Martin's girlfriend suggested that they open their relationship to include another permanent female partner, it didn't take the Montego Bay native long to figure out the person he wanted to share their beds. He had seen a girl at his workplace who he was convinced was the perfect person for their union. His girlfriend, Chanell Codner, also had eyes on a woman in the workplace.
After work, in the evenings, the happy couple updated each other about their progress in finding the perfect third wheel. Chanell's pursuit of her work colleague was promising, and Ryan was making headway as he zoned in on his target.
What they did not know, however, was that they were pursuing the same woman. Her name is Gillane Spence.
"When we realised that we were talking about the same girl, we up we game," Ryan told THE WEEKEND STAR as he and his two 'wives' sat at Chilling & Grilling restaurant in Montego Bay and opened up about their love story.
Gillane was enjoying being hunted. She found Chanell to have a "sweet personality" and was attracted to Ryan's intelligence. The thought of being involved in a throuple intrigued her.
"When I found out that they were together, it got more interesting for me. I was like, 'OK, cool, they are both nice and I am attracted to both genders, so it wasn't an issue for me'," Gillane said.
She made the decision to join forces with Ryan and Chanell. Their relationship has yielded two children. First, Chanell give birth to a son. She was already pregnant when Gillane joined the party, having been with Ryan for two years prior. Gillane had a son in 2019. Ryan, who has two children from a previous relationship -- a 22-year old girl and 18 year-old boy -- told THE WEEKEND STAR that they are having the time of their lives.
"We are just a love that's happening. We were put together by chance and then we just took control of everything and we love what's happening," Martin explained.
The throuple, who live together under one roof with four of their offspring, has not had life their own way. They are often subjected to snide remarks and stares by persons who are either curious or disapproving of their lifestyles.
Gillane, for example, said some of her friends, including persons who were interested in her, tried to talk her out of being part of the trinity. She kept her story from her family for sometime, only opening up to them in 2019. "That's when everybody knew," she said.
That year, Gillane, who was pregnant at the time, did a photoshoot with her partners. In one of the photos, the ladies are seen kissing on the lips, while Ryan offered support. The images went viral.
"Most of my family members, to be honest, they detest the whole thing because of religious beliefs and societal construct," Gillane said.
"Luckily, there are one and two who are still in my corner, and I do have their support until today. ... I am an adult, I believe that I am allowed to make my own choices".
For Chanell, her ageing parents do not understand the nature of her relationship and other relatives have never raised it as an issue.
Ryan said that the only real concern for him was dealing with the question of the environment in which the children are being raised. He said that when he assessed the situation he concluded that their home was a healthy place for the children.
"When I stepped back for a second and I looked at it, it was exposing them to honesty, people loving each other, a relationship without deceit... it was all good. There were more pros than cons," he said.
They said that the openness with which they approach the relationship removes the need for mistrust. In fact , they have the passwords to each others phones, and work together to build their relationship, personal lives and businesses. They are the owners of Sure Increase Marketing & Sales Solutions, a marketing and sales outfit that specialises in promotions, event planning, social media monitoring and graphic designing. They also operate a delivery service, S.I.M.S Errands, which operates in Jamaica's second city.
Meanwhile, Ryan, Gillane and Chanell have not decided if there is room in the relationship for others. If they are to expand the union, though, the new addition cannot be a male. At present, they all see other females outside of the union because as Ryan puts it, "we are very sexual people".
Chanell says the relationship has its anchor in all three of them.
"We are the root. It is like tree where you have the root and then you have the branches. At the end of the day, the root is the root and we need the root to grow."
Ryan is ready and willing to put rings on the fingers of his lady loves. However, Jamaican law forbids marriage between more than two persons -- an adult male and a female.
"I won't get married to either of them, until, maybe in the future when that changes," Ryan said.
"We are waiting on that day, and hopeful when that happens we will be the first polygamous relationship that is joined in union here in Jamaica," the star boy added.
