"I might not talk it every day but I love you and always will."

Those are the words in one of the final text messages that Jevauni McKenzie sent to his girlfriend, Nicole Comrie. Although McKenzie is just 18 years old, he and Comrie, 21, were very much in love and spoke about their plans for the future. But on October 23, the young couple's dreams crumbled after Comrie passed away from complications of asthma at the Kingston Public Hospital, leaving McKenzie devastated.

"I miss her smile, and we used to play and joke around a lot. We had a bond like no one else. Even now her death seems unreal and unbelievable. I have never experienced a death or pain like this before. My grandfather died and that hurt, but not like this, because old persons will die when it is time. Nicole was just 21," he said.

McKenzie, a past student of Bellefield High School in Manchester, met Comrie on the social media site TikTok last December. He said he was instantly drawn to her smile and tried to get her attention by making a duet to a video that she uploaded. They started talking from there.

"I really can't explain, but there was something about her that made me attracted to her. We had discussions on the phone and met. On January 14, she came to Mandeville for my birthday, and it was from there that everything started. She met my family and they both loved each other," McKenzie said.

McKenzie uses his social media pages as avenues to express his heartbreak and pain. He stressed that like other couples, they had their ups and downs, but their love was undeniable. He also spoke highly about the love that Comrie shared for her family, especially her mother and sister.

"Further down the line we gave each other a small break because we had a relationship issue, but it was always love for us forever. We really loved each other and we were young, but we would talk about family, and so on. She wanted two children, a boy and a girl, and she had plans of us migrating and living overseas in the future. She loved her mother and younger siblings and had lots of plans for them. She always said when she get to America she would take her two sisters and mom," he said.

The teenager said that when he got a text message that Comrie had died, he initially thought someone was playing a cruel prank on him. He said he knew she suffered from asthma attacks, but had no idea that the respiratory illness would eventually take her life.

"Someone text me to ask if I heard what happened and if I heard that my girlfriend had passed away. I was at an event, and I remember just going outside and I just started crying. I knew her asthma use to trouble her a lot, but I never expected this. I really miss her," he said.
