A student of the Cornwall College in Montego Bay, St James, is suffering from a fractured leg after he jumped from the first floor of the school’s arts building to retrieve $100 that fell from him.

The STAR understands the student jumped as he thought that would be a faster route to the ground to retrieve his cash, than taking the stairs.

The school’s principal, Michael Ellis, has confirmed that the student’s injury has not been considered life threatening, but is urging students to think before making rash decisions.

"The student is now being treated at hospital and he is in the company of his father, and although he suffered a fractured leg it is not considered to be life threatening," the principal assured.

It is reported that the student was on the first floor of the school’s industrial arts building on Monday morning, when some cash fell from his hand.

Instead of running down the stairs to retrieve the money, he decided to climb over the rail and jump to the ground below. He fractured one of his leg in the region of his knee.

He was rushed to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where he was treated.
