Road deaths down 11 per cent

The Road Safety Unit is reporting that 79 persons have perished in 68 fatal crashes as of March 6.

However, road deaths have decreased by 11 per cent when compared to the corresponding period in 2022. There were 89 fatalities at that time. Fatal crashes have also decreased by 14 per cent when compared with the similar period. Motorcyclists account for 29 per cent of the road users killed since the start of the year, followed by pedestrians at 28 per cent. Private motor vehicle drivers account for nine cent, private motor vehicle passengers account for five per cent, and pedal cyclists account for nine per cent. Public passenger vehicle passengers account for 11 per cent of the road users killed. Men account for 90 per cent of the fatalities.

The parish of St Andrew accounts for 27 per cent of the overall road users killed since the start of the year, followed by St Catherine with 15 per cent. Area 3, which comprises the parishes of Clarendon, Manchester and St Elizabeth accounts for 34 per cent.
