Cop implicated in cooking oil robbery shows up to court in wheelchair
Detective Corporal Maurice Whittingham, the policeman charged in the multi-million dollar robbery of a delivery truck laden with cooking oil, appeared before the court today in a wheelchair.
It was revealed that the detective has spinal injuries, which prevent him from being able to walk. It was further explained that corrections for the condition include surgery.
His alleged accomplice, 34-year-old construction worker Michael Daley, was remanded. However, his bail has been extended on condition that he reports on Saturdays to the Olympic Gardens police.
It is reported that on December 17, 2022, both men dressed in police paraphernalia held up and robbed a truck laden with $3 million worth of cooking oil from Seprod limited.
The police said the truck was recovered in the Thetford community near Old Harbour.
The driver and sidemen who were on the truck at the time of the robbery, were reportedly tied up but managed to escape and alert the police.
The accused were arrested by the Spanish Town police, and following a thorough investigation were charged with robbery with aggravation and kidnapping.
The case involving has been transferred to the Gun Court Division in Kingston for March 30,2023 mention date.
