Like a rose among the thorns, 19-year-old Sukanya Lowden is bringing beauty to Southside, Kingston, through her make-up outfit, Beats by Sukie.

As a child, Lowden had long been entranced by make-up. She often sat at her mother's feet and watched her apply each product with grace and care.

Holding that memory dear, in 2020 when she graduated high school, she decided to turn her love of beauty into a profession by becoming a make-up artist.

"I graduated high school and I got accepted to university and the COVID thing came in and I just started to test it out. I had wanted to do it but because of school, I never paid much attention to it until the pandemic," she said.

Lowden told THE STAR that during the pandemic, her days consisted of watching a seemingly endless number of make-up tutorials to better her craft, and practising on her friends.

Three years later, the Fleet Street resident was among the make-up artists chosen to prepare costumed revellers at Mas Ready for the recent Jamaica Carnival.

"After I went to the carnival, I got a whole lot of bookings and my followers went way top after I was featured in THE STAR."
