Mom smashes daughter’s windows
A dispute between an elderly woman and her 20-year-old daughter stemming from broken window panes, could not be resolved through mediation on Tuesday in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court.
Pamela Welsh admitted to destroying windows in her daughter's room, as she needed to gain access to light switches inside the room. Welsh pleaded guilty to malicious destruction of property and threat before presiding Judge Venise Blackstock-Murray.
It was reported that on May 3 at 1:30 p.m., there was an argument between Welsh and her daughter, who is the complainant. Welsh threw a glass bottle at the complainant, breaking several window panes, and grabbed a machete, uttering, "Me ago chop yuh up." In a bid to protect herself, the complainant locked herself inside her room.
Having heard the situation, Judge Blackstock-Murray immediately asked for the assistance of the probation department to mediate the issue. However, after much deliberation, a probation officer informed the judge that the impromptu session was not successful.
"Your Honour, the matter ... is much deeper which cannot be dealt with in this jurisdiction," the prosecutor told the judge.
At the heart of the matter is said to be the house which the mother and daughter currently occupy. The daughter contends that the house belongs to her father.
The presiding judge adjourned the matter until October 23, and Welsh is to be sentenced then. A social enquiry report was requested.
