Wire fraud suspect’s extradition hearing delayed

An extradition hearing for a man who is wanted in the US for mail and wire fraud was delayed in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Wednesday, after it was revealed that he has local charges pending.

The detainee, Sherwin Belafonte, is the subject of an extradition warrant to the US state of Arizona for various charges relating to fraud. It was shared in the court that Belafonte was apprehended by the police on July 3, but he has another matter before the Manchester Circuit Court. A trial readiness hearing in that matter is set for October, while the trial is scheduled to begin next February.

The extradition matter was adjourned until September 20, when a decision is to be made about his local charges. Belafonte was remanded until then.
