Nevis escapes major damage following Tropical Storm Philippe
Officials in Nevis said the island escaped major damage during the passage of Tropical Storm Philippe earlier this week.
In a statement on Wednesday, Premier Mark Brantley said Brian Dyer, the Director of the Nevis Disaster Management Department (NDMD), submitted a report to the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) where he outlined the storm’s impact.
“Damage reported across the island thus far has been minimal. The Health sector had no reported damages. With regard the social sector two homes reported issues with missing asphalt shingles. There were no reports of damage from the faith-based organisations,” he said.
“Schools were closed and the government and private sector curtailed the working hours of the workforce as a safety measure. There were no reports of flooding issues.”
In the area of agriculture, Brantly said there was minor damage to crops like bananas, papaya and corn, and shade houses. A fishing vessel was also destroyed.
Brantley disclosed that there was damage to the canopy at the Charlestown Port Facility, and the picket fence at the Vance W Amory International Airport.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Philippe is continuing its northward journey on a path that will bring storm impacts to Bermuda later on Thursday and then eventually bring heavy rain and gusty winds to portions of New England and Atlantic Canada this weekend.
