Man cuts out babymother’s braids

October 20, 2023

A Corporate Area man has been ordered to pay $100,000 in compensation to his babymother after he used a knife to cut two braids of hair from her head.

The man, Leighton McFarlane, admitted to assaulting his babymother during a dispute that became physical.

"We were fighting, Your Honour," McFarlane informed Senior Parish Judge Lori-Anne Cole-Montaque when he appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Wednesday.

He admitted to pushing the complainant in her in the face and then proceeding to punch her in the neck, while holding a knife.

Photographs of the complainant's injuries were shown to the judge, who, upon seeing the images, described the matter as "serious".

The complainant said she was attacked by McFarlane while in a store in downtown Kingston. She requested compensation of $100,000. Cole-Montaque agreed that the sum was not unreasonable.

McFarlane made a first payment of $50,000 in court, and has been ordered to return to court on October 20 with a second payment. He is expected to be sentenced then.
