Labour Ministry confirms death of farm worker in Canada
The Ministry of Labour and Social Security has confirmed that a Jamaican on the popular farm work program in Canada died earlier this month.
He has been identified as Daniel Brown.
It is still unclear when Brown died, but according to a release from the ministry, he was found unresponsive in his room by one of his co-workers on the morning of October 8.
The information was passed along to the Acting Chief Liaison Officer, Mrs Althea Riley, who then contacted the ministry.
"The paramedics were immediately called, and he was pronounced dead. It was reported that he had returned home from work the previous evening, prepared a meal, and went to bed as usual," the ministry explained.
The ministry also said Brown's next of kin were alerted after confirming the news, and its Family Services Unit sent in to offer support and provide updates.
Earlier this month, a non-profit legal clinic in Ontario, Canada, had criticised the Jamaican Government over what it says is its lethargic response in helping injured farm workers get compensation from its Canadian counterpart.
Labour Minister Pearnel Charles Jr has however rebuffed the claim.
