Man accused of overseas work scam charged

September 12, 2024

A 55-year-old man who allegedly collected almost $200,000 from a woman in an overseas work programme scam, has been charged with obtaining money by means of false pretence.

The police say the accused, Leon Williams, of Maggotty, St Elizabeth, met the complainant in St Catherine through a family member.

In April the complainant allegedly paid Williams J$80,000 and an additional US$300 for approval by immigration, plus J$35,000 for a 10-year work permit.

When a date to undergo medical examination couldn't be confirmed she became suspicious.

Upon not receiving a requested refund a police report was filed. Williams was arrested following an investigation.

He reportedly gave a caution statement while being charged.

His court date is being arranged.
