Police kill man who allegedly attacked father with machete
The Mandeville police have fatally shot a man said to be mentally ill for allegedly attacking his father with a machete at their home on Monday.
Crime Officer for Manchester, Deputy Superintendent Dennis Simpson, told The STAR that the police were called to their house on DeCarteret road about 8:00 am, where 50-year-old Okarie Gayle was reportedly using a machete to inflict wounds onto his 77-year-old father, George Gayle.
He said when the police arrived, George was seen lying on the ground bleeding with Okarie standing over him with a machete raised in his hands.
Simmonds said the cops instructed Okarie to drop the weapon, but he refused, “and was postured as if he was about to inflict chops wounds to George Gayle”.
The police opened fire and shot Okarie.
Both men were taken to the Mandeville Regional Hospital where Okarie was pronounced dead, and George is undergoing treatment.
Simpson noted that George is in serious but stable condition.
