The People's National Party (PNP) has moved swiftly to start the deciplinary process for the former Member of Parliament now at the centre of a disturbing incest allegation involving his teenage daughter.

In a statement issued late Monday, the party said it immediately referred the ex-parliamentarian's membership to its internal disciplinary body for urgent action after learning of the charge.

"The People's National Party notes reports that a former Member of Parliament has been charged with a serious sexual offence. Our thoughts are first and foremost with the young victim and all those affected by this deeply distressing case. The protection of children and all vulnerable persons must always be our absolute priority," the PNP said, stressing that the protection of children must remain a top priority.

The development follows a report by The STAR earlier on Monday that the former MP had been arrested and charged after allegations surfaced that he sexually assaulted his daughter. His identity is being withheld to protect the child.

"Upon learning of the charges, the party has acted without delay. The accused's membership in the People's National Party has been referred to the appropriate internal processes for immediate action. We respect that the matter is now a legal one, and as such, we will limit our comments. We trust that the judicial process will be fair, thorough, and expedient," the PNP added

Sources say the alleged incident took place on January 23 while the man was assisting the child with a passport application. It is reported that after taking her to verify photographs, he later brought her to his home, where the assault allegedly occurred.

Investigators subsequently carried out an operation at the man's premises, where he was taken into custody.

The PNP said, given that the matter is now before the courts, it will limit further comment but expressed confidence that the judicial process will be "fair, thorough and expedient."

The party also made it clear that such actions have no place within its ranks.

"There is no place in our party or our society for anyone who would commit such crimes," the statement added.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Glenford Miller said checks would have to be made before he could comment on the case.

The shocking allegations have sent ripples across the political landscape, with many awaiting further developments as the matter heads into the courts.
