Dunrobin Primary gets tech upgrade

Dunrobin Primary School in St Andrew is buzzing with excitement after receiving a state-of-the-art technological upgrade, courtesy of the IGT after-school advantage (ASA) programme.

The school's outdated computer lab has been transformed into a modern tech haven, boasting 10 brand new computers loaded with updated software, a printer, and a new air-conditioning system. This initiative is part of IGT's mission to bridge the digital divide and equip students with critical STEM skills and tools for future success.

At the official handover ceremony last Friday, students eagerly explored the sleek new devices, their faces lighting up with excitement and curiosity. Their joy resonated with the school's principal, Sacheel Grant-Henry, who described the upgraded lab as a game changer for the school.

"This will assist the students in moving into the technology era, and it also gives us a competitive edge as a school," she told THE STAR. "The children have their personal devices. They do have smart devices at home, and we want to partner with home. So this aids with our partnership at home, when we have the devices at school to support what is being done at home."

The upgraded lab replaces a once-struggling facility with only five functioning computers, many of which had become obsolete. Grant-Henry recalled the challenges of trying to meet students' needs under such constraints.

"Before the upgrade, we were really just using the smart TVs in the classrooms because the computers were so outdated. This new lab is a vital addition to support the smart TVs and our students' learning," Grant-Henry said.

She emphasised the importance of computer literacy in preparing students for a globally connected world. "We cannot overemphasise and overstate the importance of computer literacy. It adds to them being a global citizen. All of what we do and say is literally generated from a computer these days."

Expressing her gratitude to IGT, she added, "We are immensely grateful to IGT for this upgrade. It will make such a significant difference in our students' learning experience and their future opportunities."

Debbie Green, general manager of IGT, shared the company's passion for making a tangible impact. "The systems are being maintained, so this is tried, tested, and proven. We know the impact it has. It opens the world for the children to understand what technology really means."
