Paternity bombshell awaits - The DNA test that could crush a dad’s heart!
Amy's* world hung in the balance as she stepped into Polygenics Consulting's Melmac Avenue office in Kingston last week. Her face was etched with fear, eyes swollen from a relentless flood of tears.
Sitting in the waiting room at the DNA testing company, her heart pounded, the weight of the moment almost too much to bear. Her one-year-old was about to undergo a test that could forever alter her life - the test to determine whether John* or Larry* is the father.
For two long days, Amy had cried and prayed, desperately hoping for the answer she so deeply desired. But in the depth of her heart, she knew the truth that had been gnawing at her for months.
"Mi a hope she a nuh fi him (John), but mi know seh him a the father," she whispered through her tears, her voice breaking under the pressure.
The pain in her words was undeniable, as her eyes filled once again with the tears she had struggled to hold back.
The 20-something-year-old Amy made the unthinkable decision of sleeping with John, her old friend, two weeks after her relationship with Larry ended. A month later, she found out that she was pregnant but had no idea which of the men was responsible. Desperate for answers, she turned to DNA Detective, a collaboration between THE STAR and Polygenics Consultants, for help.
Frail and afraid, Amy watched with trepidation as the nurse at the DNA testing facility began swabbing her daughter. Her emotions cracked wide open and fresh tears welled up, her heart heavy with dread and uncertainty.
"How mi a guh tell him?" she mumbled, the weight of the impending revelation suffocating her.
She fears that Larry, whose name in on the child's birth certificate, may not be the child's father. Larry, who lives in North America, has no other offspring.
If John was the father, the baby would become his twelfth child. For Amy, breaking the news to Larry would be the hardest thing she has ever done. He had stepped up, providing financial support for the child. Amy's heart ached as she thought of Larry's grandmother, who had become attached to the baby, even calling her every day.
"Mi just know them a guh tek it hard when mi tell them, especially the grandmother," Amy cried, the uncertainty tearing at her.
Her plan, if the results confirmed John's paternity, was to have Larry's mother deliver the devastating truth. After all, Larry wanted to take the child overseas - and that could all fall apart, depending on the test results.
John, too, was at Polygenics Consulting that day, but he made sure to arrive an hour early, not wanting to face Amy. His anger was palpable, fuelled by his belief that she decided to put Larry's name on the baby's birth certificate. He argued that if she was uncertain, she should've just left the space blank.
While Amy didn't oppose the name change, her main concern was far more pressing: John needed to take responsibility.
"Name a one thing, but him better mek sure him step to him responsibility. From she born, is one pack of Pampers him give mi, suh him better mek sure seh if she a fi him, him tek care of her," Amy declared, the frustration in her voice simmering beneath the surface.
The DNA Detective will reveal the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about who fathered Amy's child in THE WEEKEND STAR.
