The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) is advising shoppers to prioritise safety and security as they navigate the streets during their back-to-school shopping activities.

"Downtown areas, like any busy commercial hub, require heightened awareness. Parents should keep a close eye on their children, especially in crowded spaces. Avoid displaying large sums of cash and be mindful of surroundings. Consider shopping during daylight hours," the JCF urged the public yesterday in a media release. The JCF advised shoppers to venture out early so as to avoid crowds.

"Shopping areas can become extremely congested closer to the reopening of schools. Shopping early can help avoid the peak crowds, allowing for a more relaxed and safer experience. This also increases the likelihood of finding all desired items in stock," the entity said. Shoppers were also cautioned about avoiding the wearing of expensive jewellery or carrying unnecessary valuables that could attract unwanted attention.

"Always be vigilant. Keep bags and wallets secure and close to your body. Avoid placing phones or other valuables in easily accessible pockets. Teach children the importance of keeping their belongings safe," the release continued.

Shoppers were also cautioned to utilise reputable stores and vendors to ensure the authenticity and quality of products.

"Be wary of deals that seem too good to be true, as they might indicate counterfeit or substandard goods."
