Brown aims for top fighter tag

KEVIN BROWN is on target to join Kenneth Edwards as karate practitioners crowned Jamaica combined team Fighter of the Year. He recently returned from New York where he won a gold medal at the 24th Twin Towers Classic International Martial Arts Competition at the Resorts World Casino.

Brown won gold in continuous sparring, 159lbs and under, adding to two silver he had grabbed at the April 29-May 3 International Sports Kickboxing Association's (ISKA) World Championship in Portugal.

His three international medals, in addition to a near sweep of the lightweight division on the local martial arts circuit, has Brown soaring atop the combined martial arts team standings, an unassailable 43 points, as the 2015 season winds down.

"I feel really blessed because I have been training hard. Hard training pays off. I am really privileged to have won two silver medals at the ISKA World Championships. I also dominated the local circuit so I feel very accomplished," he told STAR Sports.

Brown was grand champion at June's Seido Open after winning lightweight titles at the Jamaica Superstars Invitational, Shai-Tai, Taekwon-Do and Ningen tournaments.

Touted as a gold medal prospect at July's US Open, he suffered a hamstring injury, which kept him on the sidelines in Orlando.

However, he believes he is 85 per cent on his way to full fitness and already looking forward to the 2016 season.

"This year has been a very good year, I hope to continue that form into next year," he said.
