Moviegoers in western Jamaica are mourning the loss of a beloved cinema hub as Palace Multiplex in Montego Bay has officially announced it will not reopen.

In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, the cinema operator confirmed that the location was severely damaged by Hurricane Melissa in October 2025, leaving the facility beyond repair.

"It is with a sad and heavy heart that we have come to say goodbye," the statement read. "Like many businesses in Montego Bay, our treasured Palace Multiplex was ravaged by Hurricane Melissa. After months of trying to recover, we had to face the reality that nothing was salvageable."

The announcement has sent waves of nostalgia across social media, with many Jamaicans recalling first dates, family outings and childhood memories tied to the theatre.

The Montego Bay location first opened its doors in December 2001 and quickly became a central entertainment spot in the city. For over two decades, it served as more than just a movie theatre. It was a social space where friendships formed and blockbuster moments were shared on the big screen.

Palace Amusement Company said the decision to close permanently did not come easily. After months of assessment and discussion, the team concluded that rebuilding was not feasible.

"We cannot turn the lights back on at Palace Multiplex," the statement continued.

The company also expressed deep gratitude to patrons who supported the cinema over the years, describing Montego Bay as a second home from the start of construction to its final days.

Online reactions have been emotional, with many describing the closure as the end of an era for western Jamaica's entertainment scene.

While other Palace locations across the island remain in operation, the loss of the Montego Bay multiplex leaves a noticeable gap for film lovers in the region.

For now, the curtains have closed for good on a theatre that brought stories to life for more than twenty years.
