PHILLIP Feanny's filly, SORENTINO'S STAR, is one of three horses, nominated for next Monday's Cash Pot 'Only One For Me' trophy race, in with a chance of winning the $1m bonus to sweep the Supreme Ventures Limited Two-Year-Old Series.
None of the favourites for the Cash Pot Trophy, the first leg of the $10.8m series, qualify for the bonus, which has remained untouched since first offered 11 years ago.
Despite having seven entries between them, four and three, respectively, none of champion trainer Wayne DaCosta or Richard Azan's nominees meet the requirement.
Feanny's SORENTINO'S STAR is the most fancied among the trio of qualifiers which include Antonio Barker's RUDDY'S BOY and Lee Clarke's MASTER ADAM.
To qualify for the $1m bonus, entries must have passed through the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association's Yearling Sale.
Feanny is the only trainer to have swept the series, doing so in 2013 with PRINCESS POPSTAR. However, she was ineligible for the bonus, having been sold privately as a yearling.
Alongside SORENTINO'S STAR, Feanny also has BUBBLING KITTEN in the $2.95m Cash Pot Trophy. He has reported that BUBBLING KITTEN is "short of a work", putting her participation in doubt.
SORENTINO'S STAR, Feanny said, has been working well. However, the Sorentino-Santa Baby filly has shown a tardy gate habit in two starts, which he said he has been working on.
"It's something I will have to work on. She is coming along. She might prefer to go longer," said the trainer who is renowned for his brief pre-race comments, giving away little about his horses' chances.
Similar to DaCosta, Feanny believes Azan's ZUGULU could be the horse to beat.
"He appears to have scope for improvement," he said of the colt who stormed from off the pace to outclass rivals at 1100 metres on October 3.
The rich series, dubbed the Two-Year-Old Triple Crown, continues November 28 with the $3.6m Pick-3 Super Challenge Trophy and concludes on Boxing Day, December 26, with the $4m Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes.
