Richard Azan's ZUGULU has posted the most impressive workout of 14 horses entered for Monday's Cash Pot Only One For me trophy race, the first leg of the Supreme Ventures Limited Two-Year-Old Series.
The dark bay colt galloped six furlongs in 1:13.2 Tuesday morning, two seconds faster than stablemate FEDORA's 1:15.2, in preparation for the $2.95m race at 1200 metres.
Wayne DaCosta's four entries flexed their muscles the previous morning, Monday, with DREAMLINER and FUTURE KING galloping heads-on. Both horses were clocked in 1:07.0 for five and a half furlongs. Their stablemates, VISION and A THOUSAND STARS, posted 1:07.4 and 1:08.1, respectively.
Philip Feanny's filly, SORENTINO'S STAR, the most-fancied of three runners which qualify for a $1m bonus to sweep the series, posted a modest 48.3 for a half-mile on Wednesday.
ZUGULU's sparkling workout has made him the firm ante-post favourite. Azan warned earlier this week that the big colt could return an improved animal after coming from behind on October 3 to sweep past rivals inside the final half furlong on a wet track, winning in 1:07.3 at 1100 metres.
"He is quite a big horse. He takes a while to get going. Probably that's his style, but you can never tell when he comes back a second time," he said.
"When dealing with two-year-olds, I let the jockeys work with how the horse presents himself in a race," he added.
