Chantilly take volleyball title
Chantilly Primary and Infant School won the seventh staging of the Deran Lee/Jamaica Volleyball Association (JaVa)/Philip Greenland Developmental Volleyball Championship for primary schools in Westmoreland after beating New Road All-Age 28-22 in the final yesterday at Chantilly.
New Works Primary prevailed 35-25 over Unity Primary in the third-place playoff match to ensure all three medals went to East Zone teams. The matches consisted of two eight-minute halves.
Twelve teams (four in the West Zone and eight in the East Zone) had entered the championship that began with rallies on October 22 and 23.
"We are elated, we've worked so hard. The children are very interested and I am telling you they deserve the victory", stated an overjoyed Nicole Poyser, teacher and coach at Chantilly. "It was a team effort, but thumbs up to my captain Mickyle Spencer he did a good job."
Chantilly captain Mickyle Spencer earned the most valuable player award of the event, which included leading his team to a 45-23 semi-final victory over Unity, while New Road beat New Works 32-26 in the semis.
"I am impressed with the standard of play exhibited in the parish this year," noted JaVA Western Region coordinator Haile Mika'el. "It shows that teachers/coaches are spending quality volleyball-time with their students; introducing them to the sport from as early as the Grade 4 level to ensure continuity. This attitude will definitely help the growth of the sport"
Both Chantilly and New Road will represent the parish at the National finals.
