L.P. Martin T20 cricket bowls off tomorrow

Fifteen teams are slated to compete in the L.P. Martin Funeral Home - St Mary Cricket Association - Maurice Clarke T20 cricket competition which bowls off tomorrow.

The teams are divided into two zones, with Zone A comprising: Port Maria, Trinity Land, Jack's River, Highgate, Fort George, Wilderness, Top Pen and Gayle. Highly touted Boscobel head Zone B, along with Oxford, Lodge, Sandals/Beaches, Three Hills, Bonny Gate and Day's Mountain.

Title sponsors are L. P. Martin Funeral Home, along with associate sponsors Scotiabank, Costley Construction, Total Tools, Braham's Texaco Service Station, and Beaches Ocho Rios.

Seven matches are slated for tomorrow. At Galina, in the opening match at 9 a.m., defending champions Port Maria, led by Marlon Byfield and Richard Creary, battle last year's beaten finalist Jack's River, captained by Orane Farr, while in the feature at 2 p.m. Wilderness tackle Fort George.

At Top Pen grounds, Gayle and Highgate resume rivalry in the opening encounter, while the Jermaine Chisholm-led Top Pen are up against Trinity Land.

main batsmen

In Zone 2 clashes at Boscobel Oval, Lodge tackle Day's Mountain, while Oxford look to upset Boscobel, led by top batsman Alwayne Williams. In the lone game at Bonnie Gate, Sandals/Beaches will be banking on main batsmen Michael Downer and Richardo Williams to lead them to victory against the home team.

Addressing members of the cricket fraternity at the official launch of the competition last Thursday, secretary of the Jamaica Cricket Association, Fritz Harris, lauded the St Mary Cricket Association for the outstanding work they have been doing in improving the standard of cricket in the parish. He urged the players and club officials to be dedicated to the sport and to adopt the principles of the late Maurice Clarke, after whom the competition is named.

Superintendent Stephanie Lindsey, head of the St Mary Division, noted that communities come together in a positive way through cricket competitions.
