Matherson pushing for KC victory at Champs

Top Kingston College (KC) sprinter, Jhevaughn Matherson is hoping to give his all, on and off the track, to lead the 'Purples' to this year's GraceKennedy-ISSA Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships title.

The 17-year-old, now in his second year in Class One, remains focussed on a leadership role, as KC seek to take the title away from holders Calabar High.

"I am looking to run fast times, and to help my school win the championships this year," Matherson said at the weekend.

"I will be a leader on and off the field," he told STAR SPORTS, noting he and other senior athletes will be working closely alongside KC team captain.

According to the talented sprinter, he does not a time in his mind at this stage of the season but remains confident of doing well once he remains injury-free.

"I don't have a specific time for this year but I expect great things," he said after winning the 400m comfortably at last Saturday's JAAA/Puma Development meet at Kirkvine in Manchester.

Matherson, one of island's talented young sprinters, picked up bronze in Class One 100m last year in 10.35 despite being hampered by injuries going into the meet.

He will be hoping to get gold this year.

"I am hoping to upgrade to gold, definitely. It is all about balancing athletics and academics, and staying 100 per cent fit and healthy to help my school win the championships for sure," added the sprinter.
