Montego Bay businessman Dr Germaine Spencer is leading the charge to allocate $40 million to keep Montego Bay United (MBU) in the Red Stripe Premier League for the upcoming 2018/19 season.

The administration of MBU announced earlier this month that they would be suspending their participation in the nation's top-flight football league due the financial, and the league's administration issues.

Spencer, who is a sponsor and passionate fan of the club, believes that MBU, as the 2014 and 2016 champions, would be taking a backward step if they were not in the league next season. Hence, he is calling on stakeholders in Montego Bay and Corporate Jamaica at large for support.

"We all know it takes cash to care and based on the team budget, we will need approximately $40 million per annum to function. I call on all the business stakeholders in Montego Bay, and Jamaica at large, to rally around MBU and its administration to ensure we have MBU playing in the Premier League for the upcoming 2018-19 season," Spencer said in a press release yesterday.

Spencer, who believes in the vision of MBU, which the club says is "To unify, build and empower a nation through football," outlined that the club's success in recent times has been an inspiration to the parish of St James and all of Jamaica in a time when inspiration is needed.

"I am now pledging my support in cash or kind/service through Baywest Wellness Clinic and 876 Legends Sports Bar. It is my aim to lead the charge to not only raise the necessary funds, but to ensure accountability for its expenditure via proper accounting practices," outlined Spencer, who also is the owner of Baywest Wellness Clinic and 876 Legends Sports Bar.

"It is, therefore, my hope that all Montegonians and lovers of MBU will indeed put their support behind this effort in helping whether by cash, kind/services donations. I am therefore inviting potential partners to come forward, as it is my intention to have a final meeting with the stakeholders on the way forward and in selecting a new board," he added.
