Head coach at Wolmer's Boys School, coach Alex Thomas said they will be taking a very cautious approach into this year's schoolboy football season, which begins on September 8.

The Heroes Circle-based school, which was one of the favourites to win last year's Manning Cup title, faded badly as they were knocked out at the quarter-finals stage of the competition.

In fact, Wolmer's also failed to defend their Super Cup title last season, which they had won under the guidance of Vassell Reynolds in 2016.

Thomas, who was elevated to the post at the end of last season, said the team has done well in their build-up to competition, but noted that they will be taking things one step at time at this season.

"We are under the radar coming into this season because we are taking a much different approach going into competition," said Thomas. "The expectations this year is to do better than last season. We have been putting in tremendous work week in, week out because the boys have been working extremely hard in the preseason."

KEY FIGURES

Wolmer's are highly favoured to top Group G, which includes Jose Marti, Waterford, Edith Dalton James, Pembroke Hall and Holy Trinity, especially considering that key figures such as Tajay Griffiths, Nickache Murray, Benjamin Phillips and Cleon Haynes have returned.

However, Thomas added that every game is going to be tough and so they are not going to take anyone for granted.

"Looking at our group, we are not going to take any team lightly because we will be taking a very serious approach, as our aim is to finish atop of the group," Thomas said.

"We have some quality players, young mixed with experience ... it's a good band of players and they are happy and we are working together," said Thomas, whose team last won the Manning Cup competition in 1995.

"We have some players that are unknown and these are players that are trying to make a name for themselves this season and so I am expecting great things from them," Thomas stated.
