Principal of Jamaica College (JC) Wayne Robinson said he is hoping that construction work on the school's new eight-lane synthetic track will be completed in time for their season-opening development track meet, which is scheduled annually for January.

Robinson told STAR Sports that the work on the facility has been delayed due to the recent heavy rains.

"The track is advancing, and we have laid the ground surface, and the Germans are here now looking to put on the overlay," said Robinson.

"But it can't be laid in the rain, so we are hoping that we can get a little break from the rain to finish it up before the end of the year - that is the plan," Robinson added.

"You can't lay the track in the rain at all, and that is my understanding, and that is a setback, but after that has been done, then we should put in lights, and then we should be all right," Robinson said.

The multipurpose facility, which is being funded by the Ashenheim family, is being constructed by Jamaican company Pavecon, along with German company BSW.

Robinson added that the JC/ WATA track meet, which is the first major development meet of the season, is an important part of the track and field calendar.

"The plan is that we will have the track for the first meet, and even if we are not totally finished with everything, we should be well enough to host the meet," Robinson said.

"So far we are pleased [with the work], but we still have some work to do. We are comfortable with the progress of the facility," he pointed out.
